Aiea vs Konawaena Live Varsity HS Football Playoffs

One of Hawaii's premier high schools is set to host a matchup that has the potential to get a little lively, as Aiea and Konawaena go head-to-head in the Live Varsity football playoffs. Established in 1965, Konawaena is one of the oldest public schools in Oahu, while Aiea was founded in 1969. With such a great rivalry between these two campuses, it's not hard to see why they are considered two of the top teams on Oahu. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Aiea's stadium, with a live stream available through the Varsity TV smartphone app.

Aiea finished their regular season as the top seed in WIAA Division I, going 10-0 and outscoring opponents, 568-51 this season, while Konawaena went 6-4 to finish as runner-up in WIAA Division II, ranking fourth in total points scored (345), with a total of 437 points allowed during the regular season.

The Konawaena Wildcats boast a record of 28-6 since 2009, while the Aiea Warriors finished the season with a record of 10-3.

Konawaena has done this all while facing possibly one of the toughest schedules Oahu, having to play teams from Waianae, Kamehameha Schools, and Kapolei in order to get to this game. The Wildcats will be looking for their seventh stat

"That's what we've been working for all year," said Senior Quarterback Aaron Harris about his team's chances at winning it all this Saturday. "We'll be going up against the best team in West Oahu, and I'm sure both teams will be ready for it. I think our defense has been a big piece to our success, being able to shut down our opponents. I know that we've been working hard on offense the past week, trying to prepare for how they might try and attack us."

One of the Panthers' best assets this season was their running back, Junior Jalen Villegas (21 carries, 161 rushing yards). "We're just happy we did well as a team," said Coach Daniel Tanoa when asked about his team's recent success. "Our scoring leader has been Jalen Villegas. He's been running strong all year and scored touchdowns in our games, so he's been great on offense. We're also very happy with our defense. Our defensive line has been a big part of all of our success, allowing just three points per game, and that's why I believe we've been able to stay undefeated."

Konawaena has had a tough time keeping the ball away from their opponents' possession this season. The Wildcats could not prevent their opponents from getting the ball out of their hands this season, as opponents were able to record an average of 2.0 turnovers per game in 2015. This is the same average that Aiea gave up, as well.

Aiea could see a repeat of their last matchup against this opponent, as each game played between these two schools has been decided by a touchdown or less.

Of the two teams, only Konawaena had a winning record at home in 2015. The Wildcats went 4-0 at home this season, while the Warriors finished 4-2 on their own field.

Due to this recent form both teams have been displaying, it seems that Saturday's game could go either way

"We're looking forward to a big game," said Coach Alex Cruz of the Warriors. "We are playing a really good team."
