World Cup 2022 - Spain 7-0 Costa Rica

This week, Spain defeated Costa Rica 7-0 in their World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica.

These international results are often rough, but there were a few yellow cards and one red card to show for it. There was not much to see when this match kicked off. However, the first goal came quickly in the 10th minute when Rodrigo Pérez scored. Then in the 12th minute, Sergio Ramos scored on a header from a Filipe Luis corner kick and Costa Rica became too tired to mount any resistance. In the 34th minute, David Silva provided scoring assistance with his pass from deep into the box after passing through five defenders to slip past Diego Chirivella's feeble challenge. This goal was scored by Fernando Torres. Three minutes later, Costa Rica's Yeltsin Tejeda got a straight red card and was ejected.

At halftime, when the score was 3-0 to Spain, Costa Rica tried to put up a fight and push forward. They started to fire off long shots and hope for rebounds, but they were denied. The closest they came to scoring was in stoppage time when Oscar Duarte forced a save from David de Gea by shooting low at the left post from outside the 18-yard box with his left foot.

In the second half, Spain relaxed in the knowledge that they were ahead 5-0 on the scoreboard and had a man advantage. They tried to play counter-attacking soccer, but when they scored a sixth goal in the 57th minute, the match was over.

Hatem Ben Arfa is on the bench due to his yellow card suspension, while Xabi Alonso and Santi Cazorla are out due to injury. Spain will rest some players tomorrow and will try to gain ground in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
